Examples of workshops directed by Emmanuel: Workshops directed by Emmanuel can take place one after the other in a progressive sequence, or can take place individually. The workshops as a whole design a complete training cycle. This starts with the study of the myths and tragedy, including exercises on the "masque neuter" and continues with commedia dell'arte, melodrama, Shakespeare and pantomime. The training is concluded by seminars aimed at exploring the linkages between theatre and painting, theatre and cinema and theatre and television. THE BUFFOONS MELODRAMA COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE TALES AND MYTHS FROM DIFFERENT CONTINENTS AVANT-GUARD THEATRE OF THE NINETEEN CENTURY THE BUFFOONS Starting point of this style is a literary and pictorial research on the grotesque. The paintings of Bosch, Bruegel and Goya contribute in identifying the derisory and disturbing presence of the buffoon: inhabitant of medieval courts, gothic cathedrals, suburbs and swamps. < Top
MELODRAMA The moon lights up the world of melodrama. When the sun disappears at the horizon and the moon rises, our theatre changes. We enter the night world, that of interior feelings. The moon plays joyful with its reflections and the actor lets himself go into the interpretation of this sentimental world. The gesture becomes soft, oblique and romantic and the space gets full of sentiments. Melodrama is all about feelings, nostalgia, love and departures. "Doctor Zhivago" and "Gone with the Wind" are not far away… Jacques Lecoq used to say: "each of us carries a melodrama within himself" and he was absolutely right. < Top
COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE After an overview on the commedia, the characters will be analyzed, as well as the typical situations and storylines in order to highlight the basic philosophy of this style. The study will then focus on the initial steps of this rising Commedia, still raw but full of vibrant vitality: the "sudden Comedy" (Commedia all' impovviso) which is free of heavy texts and codes. The team work will be strengthened using plots containing recurrent mechanisms for comic situations, such as: misunderstandings and quid pro quo. Afterwards themes and characters are introduced, reproducing situations, times and rhythms that comic language has preserved unchanged for centuries. < Top
TALES AND MYTHS FROM DIFFERENT CONTINENTS We will produce Zen tales that propose a synthetic and symbolic story, where the word is essential and poetic; Tibetan tales full of fantastic and mythic images, with baroque and delicate gestures; the comic and raw tales of the Mongolian and Chinese tradition and the African ones, simple and colourful. < Top
AVANT-GUARD THEATRE OF THE NINETEEN CENTURY SURREALIST THEATRE AND THEATRE OF THE ABSURD The student will analyze and identify methodologies and issues related to the major psychological and moral themes of our age. The incapability to communicate, loneliness, alienation, brutalization, cruelty and scepticism will be transferred to a poetic dimension, totally unreal, which represents the reality of the modern human being. Feelings and emotions are lost; the gestures wither, giving out weak, often nonsense signals. Madness invades reality, creates new communication paths and shapes, based on modern day's frustrations. The civilized man, with his civilised appearance, hides an isolated being, mad, who wanders looking for himself. The improvisations, will lead us to the contemporary dynamics, made of actions and speed, fragmented gestures and images, empty language, where man is fighting alone in a desert. < Top
